Two Swiss policemen called Poget and Deiss (the one who cut off the rope) appeared on 13 th February 2006 in court in the rural town of Aubonne (Switzerland State of Vaud) Indymedia witnesses got a bad treatment in the box

The latter is a petty officer of the police force. Several witnesses told their story in the box: half a dozen policemen and two Indymedia activists as well as one lady activist who saw it all during the demo on the bridge. Most policemen stated they could not understand the incoming messages broadcast on their walkie-talies because the noise of their own vehicule was too loud or because the situation was too chaotic at the time. It appeared that no suitable communication system was available between the policemen on the spot and the German speaking policeman who severed the rope.
The one called Deiss stuck to his unlikely story: he said he did not know two people were hanging at both ends of the rope . He simply severed it "instinctively" , without requesting any authorization from his superior. He did not bother to ask anything to his colleague, standing one meter away, as why he clang so desperately to the rope and why he insisted on preventing it from falling down. The German speaking Swiss policeman, recruited at the other end of the country for the occasion and who did not speak a single word of French, told the court he was anxious to clear the highway bridge because the G8 official motorcade was about to pass by. Their orders, ( the ones they consentend to listen to) they claimed , was to allow the motorcade to reach their aim.
Poget's story purporting to explain why he created the situation leading to his subordinate's decision illustrates adequately his stubborn and instinctive attitude. He hastened to clear the highway five seconds after the activists arrived on the brige and destroyed the first security banner he could catch. After that, he assaulted a video cameraman and added he did not" give a damn" if activists were injured or" had their face smashed in". After he severd the rope, he even took them to task while he was at it: "We'll pull that f......sh.. mafia in ". He meant the activists who were standing on the bridge, highly schoked by what had just happened. He kept his word and took no action whatsoever to help the endangered climbers. One of them crashed underneath the bridge while the other, - a lady activist - remained hanging 30 minutes at the other end of the rope, which is a an agonizing situation.
Questions asked in court were much more aggressive and punchy when directed towards the Indymedia activist and the person responsible for maintaining relationships with the Police. This was considered as the "normal way of behaving for a lawyer" . So were irrelevant questions directed towards witnesses for the defence. This was obviously meant to intimidate and discredit them. For example, lawyers for the police seemed unable to understand that the activist had no appointed official leader !
